A pre-owned Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce or Mercedes-Benz can be an excellent buy — if you know what to look for. Luxury cars are complex and expensive to repair, so a few careful checks before you pay can save you a lot of trouble. Use this checklist every time you view a used luxury car in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE.

1. GCC Specification or Import?

Ask whether the car is GCC specification. GCC-spec cars are built for the regional climate and are usually easier to service and resell locally. Imported cars can be good value too, but check where the car came from, whether it has any history abroad (for example, flood or accident records) and whether local dealers will service it.

2. Full Service History

  • Ask for the complete service book or digital service record.
  • Check that services were done on time, ideally at an authorised dealer or a recognised specialist.
  • Gaps in the history, or many owners in a short time, are reasons to ask more questions.

3. Check the VIN

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must match on the car, the registration card and the service documents. Use it to request the car’s history from the manufacturer’s dealer, and to check for open recalls, accident records and any outstanding finance.

4. Look for Accident and Paint Repairs

  • Walk around the car in daylight and look for uneven panel gaps or colour differences between panels.
  • A paint-thickness gauge quickly shows panels that have been repainted.
  • Check under the carpets and in the boot for signs of water damage or rust.

5. Get an Independent Pre-Purchase Inspection

For any luxury car, pay for an inspection by a specialist who knows the brand. They can read fault codes, check the gearbox, suspension, brakes and electronics, and spot costly problems that a test drive will not show.

6. Test Drive Properly

  • Start the car from cold if you can.
  • Drive at city and highway speeds, and test the brakes, steering, air conditioning and every electronic feature.
  • Listen for knocks, rattles or whining noises, and watch the dashboard for warning lights.

7. Warranty, Tyres and Running Costs

Ask whether any manufacturer warranty or service contract remains and whether it transfers to you. Check the tyres’ age and condition, and ask a dealer about the cost of the next major service, so you know the true cost of ownership before you buy.

8. Paperwork and Transfer

Make sure the seller is the registered owner, that any bank loan has been settled and that there are no unpaid fines on the car. Complete the ownership transfer with the seller through the RTA (or the relevant emirate’s authority) and check the official requirements before your appointment.
